Governor and Mrs. McDonnell Participate in Commonwealth Day of Gleaning August 16, 2012
First Lady Maureen McDonnell worked with area volunteers and representatives from the Society of St. Andrew and the Virginia Federation of Food Banks gleaning produce at Mount Olympus Farm in Ruther Glen. She and Governor McDonnell then delivered the produce to the Central Virginia Food Bank. Gleaning is the traditional practice of gathering crops that would otherwise be left in the fields to rot, or be plowed under after harvest but which are still fresh and excellent sources of nutrition. Governor McDonnell declared August 16, 2012 as "A Day of Gleaning" and similar efforts took place throughout the state.
