First Lady Welcomes Chinese Television Delegation to Discuss Media Exchange Opportunities

RICHMOND – On Friday, Sept. 9, First Lady of Virginia Maureen McDonnell hosted a delegation from China Central Television (CCTV) at the Governor's Mansion in Richmond. The group came to Virginia as a result of Governor Bob McDonnell's trade mission to Asia in May of 2011. During that trip, the First Lady and representatives of the Virginia Tourism Corporation met with China Public Television officials regarding opportunities to work together on media related initiatives.  

"It is exciting to work with an institution like China Central Television on initiatives that can produce such great mutual benefits" said Mrs. McDonnell. "I am grateful that our trade mission is producing results such as these and that Virginia now has the opportunity to host this distinguished delegation." 

The Chinese delegation of six was led by Mr. Huang Chuanfang, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief, China Central Television. Other members included representatives of CCTV Documentary Channel and CCTV International Promotion Center of China Central Television.  While in Virginia, the group visited Albemarle County and Charlottesville, Richmond, Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach and met with tourism officials, public television representatives and members of Virginia's film and television industry. 

CCTV is the primary state-run television broadcast entity in the People's Republic of China, with more than 20 channels that broadcast news, entertainment, comedy, drama and documentaries to more than 1 billion viewers. CCTV broadcasts worldwide in many different languages including English, French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. China Central Television falls under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. In January 2011, CCTV launched its new documentary channel that has both a Chinese and an International English edition. It is seen in more than 30 provinces, cities and districts within China and in more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.
