STERLING - First Lady Maureen McDonnell and Heidi Murkoff, author of the world's best-selling pregnancy and parenting series that began with "What to Expect When You're Expecting," partnered yesterday with Operation Homefront DC Metro to host a "What to Expect" Baby Shower for 100 new and expecting military moms and spouses from Fort Belvoir. Mrs. McDonnell, in partnership with Operation Homefront and Whattoexpect.com, participated in a day of activities including a Q & A session with Heidi Murkoff, author of the best selling "What to Expect…" series, pregnancy & parenting sessions, presents, a catered luncheon and an exclusive private viewing of the film, "What to Expect When You're Expecting." The event took place in Springfield.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. McDonnell said, "I know how difficult it is on the family when a loved one is deployed, and it can be especially difficult when you are having a baby. These expectant mothers are the quiet, selfless heroes of the freedoms we wake up to every morning, and a huge part of the Commonwealth we all call home. I know from experience, that the great men and women in our military perform best when they know their families are being cared for back home."
Heidi Murkoff said, "Every mom needs support, reassurance, a helping hand, a hug-but military moms, who so often have to go it alone, who often don't have that network of support, need it, and deserve it, so much more. I am so happy and so honored to be part of this very special celebration of moms -- the best part, of course, having a chance to hug every mom who came. Doesn't get better than that!"
